UpDown Gallery ‘ONE’

In celebration of our first year in the heart of Ramsgate and in anticipation of many more to come UpDown Gallery is proud to announce our First Birthday Show. With a look back at some of the highlights of our first year’s programme and a smattering of tasters for the year ahead, the exhibition will be at once a celebration and a reflection.

Since we opened our doors UpDown have hosted ten exhibitions, alternating Modern Masters like Picasso and Matisse, with a rising generation of British talent including Piers Secunda, Katharine Le Hardy and Cedric Christie, and the giants of British Pop (Peter Blake), Op (Bridget Riley) and Abstraction (Howard Hodgkin). Building on this strength and breadth our First Birthday Show promises a refreshing mix: with the landscape based work of Martin Fidler and Le Hardy, taking its place alongside the more conceptual practice of Cedric Christie and Piers Secunda and the Pop infused cool of Martin Grover and Peter Blake.

Looking forwards into 2014 the show will also offer a first glimpse at some of the highlights of our second year’s programme. Focussing our attentions on eight exhibitions across the year UpDown hope to build upon the successes and ambitions of our first year in business. We will continue to bring you the best in British and International art – expanding the list of gallery artists through solo and mixed exhibitions as well as an exciting group of externally curated shows.

Anticipating this, our Birthday show will feature fragments of our forthcoming American Abstraction and Brit Pop exhibitions (with works by Robert Motherwell, Eduardo Paolozzi and Richard Hamilton). It will also offer introductions to some younger artists we are delighted to be offering solo shows next year including the stirring, ecologically based work of Stephen Melton, the sumptuous and innovative wallpaper of Tony Roche and the expansive multimedia based practice of Colin Booth (whose solo shows will run in May, July and September respectively).

With all this, and more to be announced, our First Birthday Show reveals UpDown Gallery at an exciting juncture – taking stock of what has been a tremendous first year and facing the future with renewed hope and ambition. We would like to take the opportunity to thank all those of you who have helped to make our first year such a special one and invite all of you who have not yet made it in, to help us continue our work at the heart of Ramsgate’s creative community.
